Making the call was Kuching District Education Officer Bedui Une who hoped the selected Kuching athletes will strive their best to end the dominance by the Oil Town in the annual meet.

It was understood that Miri were powered by athletes from Riam Road Secondary School and SMK Chung Hua Miri who are products of good development programmes.

“We are hoping to do better in Miri this year and become the overall champions,” Bedui said at the closing of the 47th MSS Kuching Track and Field Championship at the State Stadium on Saturday.

As there is only about half a month left to the state championship, Bedui hoped that the coaches involved would work harder and intensify the training for the athletes.

“We only lost to Miri last year by five golds and I am confident that with better preparation, commitment and fighting spirit, our athletes will be able to perform even better in Miri,” he said.

One hundred and forty-four athletes have been selected for centralised training at SMK Tabuan Jaya State Sports School from March 30 to April 8.

They will be trained by head coach Rasia Lutang from SMK Tabuan Jaya and she will be assisted by 19 other coaches.
