BAU: Barisan Nasional (BN) youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin yesterday stressed that the ‘Jelajah One Malaysia (JOM)’ programme in Sarawak was a way to drum up support and ensure victory for BN in the coming election, without interfering with state politics.

Khairy, who was speaking at a JOM programme in Kampung Buso here, explained that the JOM expedition throughout the nation was a way for BN Youth to foster greater ties and understanding of issues and matters in the various areas, especially in the rural districts.

“Our expedition to Sarawak also aims to create greater ties between Peninsula Malaysia and both Sabah and Sarawak. Both states in my opinion require greater attention to ensure a linear development with Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.

He elaborated that the nation should be proud of the 1Malaysia concept as no states were left behind in terms of development.

“Under BN, Sarawak had seen tremendous change. Bintulu was nothing in the early 1980’s, but opportunity and development had provided economic progress as local and foreign oil and gas companies started to operate there,” he said.

He pointed out that members of parliament from Sarawak had always raised development issues on matters such as education, infrastructure and education during parliament sittings and that he would support any issue brought up by any one of them.

On another matter, Khairy touched on states governed by the opposition, labelling them as good in making promises which they fail to execute.

“During the 2008 general election, the opposition promised everything from the abolishment of highway tolls, free water, increase in salary for teachers and lower assessment rates. But in the end what happened?” he asked.

Saying that he would not touch on personal issues, Khairy stated that in terms of policy implementation it was clear that the opposition had failed, resulting in dissatisfaction among the people.

“Look at recent issues involving the opposition in Sarawak. They can’t event negotiate on the seats allocation and how will they govern the state if the people choose them. This is why BN is the best choice,” he said.

The JOM delegate also presented wheelchairs to the needy from the village, apart from assisting in rebuilding an old house owned by a villager before heading to Kampung Sebako in Lundu.

Also present yesterday were Mosti deputy minister Fadillah Yusuf, who is also state BN Youth chief, Mas Gading MP Datuk Tiki Lafe and Tasik Biru incumbent Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie.
