SANDAKAN: An 88-year-old woman has been reported missing from her home at Taman Mawah since Tuesday evening.

Her granddaughter Wong Ka Pek, 29, said that Sum Wan Sung loves to go shopping at the market nearby, but the family had discouraged her from going out on her own due to her age and failing memory.

“I am in charge of feeding her and giving her medication. As usual during dinner time, I would go up to her room, on the first floor, to look for her. She was not in the room. I came down and informed my father and two brothers,” said Wong.

The family immediately went to the nearby area and started searching for the old woman. They found her shoe, an umbrella and a plastic bag with some food inside a drain nearby. They went to the hospital fearing that she might have either fallen down or had met with an accident or that someone had sent her to the hospital for medical attention.

Failing to find her, they informed and sought the help of the police who later came with search dogs and searched the nearby areas but to no avail.

District police chief ACP Rowell Marong confirmed the case and said police are assisting in the search for the missing woman.

Members of the public are urged to render their assistance and can contact the Wong family at telephone numbers 019 813 6898, 019 833 6899 and 019 833 6163.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed in an accident along Jalan Sandakan-Kinabatangan near here on Tuesday.

In the 10am incident, Hasanuddin Mod Kassim was riding his motorcycle towards Sandakan when he collided with a lorry.

He sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Marong said police had recorded a statement from the lorry driver.
