SIBU: The Bawang Assan constituency will see a straight fight between BN incumbent Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and DAP Alice Lau Kiong Yieng.

It was around 10am, the Returning Officer Wong See Meng emerged to announce the names of the two candidates amidst shouts from both sides of the fence at the nomination centre.

Later in an interview Soon Koh felt confident of retaining the seat based on his track record as incumbent for Bawang Assan.

The four-term assemblyman had based his chances on his track records, saying that he had helped transform Bawang Assan literally from scratch.

Soon Koh also said there were really no issues affecting the people of Bawang Assan.

“All issues affecting the people of Bawang Assan or rather the issues played up by the opposition, we will try to resolve them,” he said adding he was sincere in helping to bring changes and development to Bawang Assan.

Asked whether he would take it lightly that his opponent was a woman candidate, Wong swept that suggestion aside, adding that he never underestimated his opponent even if they were women.

On his campaign trail, Soon Koh said he would continue to go to the Iban longhouses and also visited the rural as well as the urban Chinese population in Bawang Assan constituency to bring the messages around.
