SIBU: The growth in higher education reflects the government’s commitment towards education.
Chairman of SMK Tung Hua’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Eric Chiu Ing Siong said the higher education has continued to grow from strength to strength – from public universities to private colleges to foreign branch campuses.
Speaking as guest-of-honour when officiating at the school education fair 2011 jointly ogranised by the PTA and counselling unit of the school on Tuesday, he said this growth reflected the government’s commitment towards education.
He said higher education is pivotal in creating a knowledgeable workforce that is not only skilled but also able to meet the challenges of a globalised world.
“The boom in higher education has led to the widening of access to tertiary education,” he said.
On the education fair, representatives of tertiary institutions from Malaysia, Singapore, China, Russia, the UK and all over the world would be on hand to meet students who are preparing to enter colleges and universities.
Students are encouraged to visit the fair where they could find out about enrolment requirements, courses offered, various payment plans available for tuition fees, application process as well as admission chances for the respective participating institutions.
This fair would allow students to explore where their potential could take them and inform them about their options to pursue higher education in Malaysia or overseas.
To the students, Chiu hoped they would make full use of this opportunity to learn more about the tertiary education opportunities available.
“Talk to the representatives from the various institutions and weigh your options carefully before deciding on the best path for yourselves,” Chiu advised the Form Five and Form Six students present.
Earlier in her speech, principal of the school Ling Chai Ping disclosed that a total of 28 institutions of higher education will participate in the fair to guide students in making an informed choice of their career path.
“We want to expose our students to the vast opportunities that are available as early as possible so that after they have completed their fifth or six forms, they are all well informed and could decide to further their studies in their respective area.
“Tertiary education is a stepping stone to achieving your goals in life. Therefore, we should all be very careful in choosing the right pathway that will lead us to where we would like to be,” she advised the students.
