SIBU: Traders in the country’s largest market have been urged to support the five Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates here to ensure they emerge victorious tomorrow.

Sibu Central Market Hawkers Association chairman Yiing Chung Ming made the appeal to some 1,000 hawkers there because, he pointed out, it was the BN government which created the conducive environment for them to trade in.

He said the government understood the plight of the people and walked the extra mile to help bring about a better quality of life.

“It is only fair that we return the mandate to the BN candidates, who broke their backs to develop Sibu and we are what we are today because of their hard work,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday, adding all traders should make sure they vote tomorrow.

He said if each family of traders has about five voters, the total number of votes from the market would be quite substantial.

“I hope traders will have a heart-to-heart talk with their family members to cast their votes wisely on election day as this concerns their future and that of their children,” he advised.

Yiing said voters in Bukit Assek constituency would give BN candidate Chieng Buong Toon, from the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), the chance to prove himself.

“I think it is only fair that we give him a chance to show what he can do for the people of Bukit Assek. Unless he is given a chance to serve the people, we can never know for sure what he is capable of doing,” he said.

Yiing said he appreciated what Chieng had done in the past two years for the people of Bukit Assek.

Beside clearing water-clogged drains, he helped upgrade sunken roads to reduce the severity of floods in low-lying areas of the densely populated constituency.

The Chinese majority area which has 26,926 registered voters will see a three-cornered-fight with Chieng taking on the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Richard Wong Ho Leng and independent Hii Tiong
Huat.

The other BN candidates in the Sibu area are Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh (Bawang Assan), Datuk Tiong Thai King (Dudong), Vincent Goh (Pelawan) and Dr Annuar Rapaee (Nangka).
