KUCHING: Villagers in Kampung Telaga Air near here can now enjoy wireless Internet access, thanks to the National Broadband Initiative launched by the prime minister last year.

Santubong MP Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar believes that such a service would narrow the digital divide between rural and urban areas.

“The wireless service available for villagers in Telaga Air can accommodate lots of users and, more importantly, students here can make full use of this facility for their studies,” he said when launching Wireless Village at Plaza Ria in Telaga Air, some 40km from here, yesterday.

Wan Junaidi, who is Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker, advised the villagers to be mindful of the websites they browsed to avert undesirable outcomes.

He said parents should also monitor their children’s online activities so that the young generation would not abuse or be misled by some portal sites.

The government was not imposing any censorship on Internet usage and as such all users must be aware of the pros and cons of the facility, he said.

For instance, he said if roads were provided for people but some users failed to observe and adhere to traffic rules, accidents would take place.

“If they do not know the traffic system and just go any way they like, accidents are bound to happen. Therefore, we must abide by the laws and in the case of Internet use we have to learn to make the facility useful.”

Wan Junaidi pointed out that the wireless service was part of continuous efforts by the federal government to enhance Internet penetration throughout the country.

“Gradually, more villages in Sarawak will be provided with such wireless system,” he said while spending time explaining to villagers in Telaga Air on computerisation, the digital era and use of IT gadgets.

“With the wireless service in place now, you all can stay connected using iPhone, Samsung Galaxy Tab and iPad.”

Among those present were BN candidate for Pantai Damai Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and Telaga Air 1Malaysia Community chairman Sapuan Oya.
