SIBU: Sarawak DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng said green horn Yap Hoi Liong, who dubbed himself as the head of the beggar clan based on the famous sword-fighting novel hero, has risen with the power of the commoners.
He said he had fought against the odds in the election, including the forces from the rich and the famous, to rise in the political arena.
He said Yap, who is a lawyer presently doing chambering, was groomed by his party as his special political assistant, “and with him elected a statesman, he is now my partner and colleague in the August House.”
Wong, who is also Sibu MP and Bukit Assek assemblyman, said yesterday the people sent Yap into the state assembly because they rejected money politics.
He admitted there could be irregularities in the just-concluded election, saying the dust had just settled, and it was time for them to study the wide allegations about money being illegally involved.
“We have received so many allegations,” he said, adding they would look into them now before deciding on their next course of action.
Despite the alleged irregularities, Wong was apparently pleased with the election results, saying they contested in 15 seats and won in 12 of them.
“I said in the press conferences during the campaign that we were targeting getting 12 seats, and we achieved that.”
Meanwhile, Wong said the people had had clearly sent a strong message to the government that they wanted change.
He said the people had wanted reforms in matters related to education, land and others, including transparency in the government.
Otherwise, he said, they would face greater setbacks soon.
