KUCHING: The wish of the Chinese community not to have representation in the Barisan Nasional (BN) government should be respected.

The chief political secretary to the Chief Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah pointed out that the community has voiced this out loud and clear with their strong support for Democratic Action Party (DAP) in the just concluded election.

“There should not be any “back door” entrance just to accommodate the Chinese community in the Cabinet.

“The Chinese community has voice out loud and clear that they do not want representative in the government, so we must respect their decision,” he said when contacted yesterday to comment on a suggestion to amend the law to enable the state government to nominate non-elected representatives from the Chinese community to sit in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN).

This suggestion was put forth by Senator Datuk Idris Buang who is also a member of PBB Supreme Council.

Karim said by having DAP assemblymen in the DUN, it would also reflect the Chinese representation.

“We must respect the due course of democracy and process of election … the Bumiputeras will not be happy to this proposal,” he said.

PBB vice youth chief Pandi Suhaili echoed similar remarks by saying the Chinese community only wanted to have representatives in the DUN and not the government.

He said the Chinese community has been reminded on numerous occasions that they might lose representation in the government if they voted for DAP.

“However, it is clear to all of us that the Chinese community only want representatives in the DUN and not in the government. Therefore, all of us should respect their decisions,” he said.
