Charity walkathon in support of breast cancer awareness

KOTA KINABALU: Kinabalu Pink Ribbon, a breast cancer support association, will be organizing the Mothers’ Day Walk Abreast 2011 on May 8 from 6.30am-10.30am at the Perdana Park @ Hone Place, Tanjung Aru here.

Its president, Lucilla Pang, said the objective of this walkathon is to raise public awareness of breast cancer and to celebrate Mother’s Day in honour of all women, the pillars of our society.

She said Datin Seri Panglima Datuk Hajjah Faridah Bt Tussin, wife of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, had agreed to grace the inaugural event and to conduct the flag-off ceremony at 7.30am.

Members of the public, especially mothers and families, are encouraged to participate in the 2km walkathon starting from Perdana Park to the Tanjung Aru beach and township, and back to the park.

Every participant will receive a pink-ribbon T-shirt upon registration and a free goodies bag upon completion of the walkathon.

There will also be many attractive prizes for lucky draws and a pink Mother’s Day gift for all mothers.

Prizes will also be awarded for the highest team entry for groups under the three categories (Non-Governmental Organnisations, Corporate/Government Department and School/College/Institution) to encourage organizations to register as a group so as to make it a fun event for everybody.

There will also be several stage performances to entertain the spectators.

Kinabalu Pink Ribbon will also open a registration counter at Karamunsing Complex (in front of Digital Color Foto Shop) this Saturday from 1pm-7pm and thereafter, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5pm-7pm. The closing date for entry submission is May 5.

Kinabalu Pink Ribbon, the first and only breast cancer support association in Sabah, was registered with the Registrar of Societies on June 7, 2010 and membership is open to all breast cancer survivors and volunteers.

Its aims and objectives are to provide emotional support to newly-diagnosed patients; counseling for survivors and their families; and to raise breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection.
