Malaysian Nature Society needs more volunteers

MIRI: The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), Miri branch is calling for more volunteers to assist in the society’s community outreach programmes held in conjunction with this year’s World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2011.

Head of the MNS, Miri Branch, Nazeri Abghani said at least five programmes will be organised starting today at Kampong Kuala Nyalau until May 21 at various venues.

The programme at Kampung Nyalau starting at 9 am to 5 pm which will involve children, young people and their parents is based on the theme “River ecosystem conservation, fireflies, waterbirds, wetlands and our coral reefs water”.

“Other than our usual talks and slideshow, we are hoping to make the day interesting for everyone while on April 30, during our Community Outreach in Kpg Bungai, we are also looking for some very creative and some interesting ideas around activities for children other than talks by myself, Musa, and Kumar.”

“These has to be related to the theme at hand : Fireflies and River Conservations, Waterbirds and Wetlands, Reefs and Marine Ecosystems. We welcome all input,” Nazeri told the Borneo Post.

The other community outreach programmes will be held on May 7 at Kampong Kuala Sibuti, May 15 at Kampong Masjid, Kuala Baram and on May 21 at Pustaka Miri.

The programmes at Kampung Kuala Sibuti and Kampung Masjid from 9am to 5pm will also include talks on the same theme.

At Pustaka Miri, it will be held from 1 – 3 pm and the activities comprise of colouring and drawing contests on birds o f Sarawak and from 3 – 5 pm, there will be talk and Slidehow – “WMBD: Birdwatching in Miri: Common Birds in Your Garden and Other Rare Birds Beyond”.

Nazeri said the outreach programme is part of their environmental education towards raising public awareness on the importance of the environment and nature conservation.
