KOTA KINABALU: More Sabahans are expected to cast for the Miss Universe Malaysia 2012 contest.

This expectation holds true especially when many previous winners of beauty pageants hailed from the state like Cassandra Patrick who won the Miss Malaysia Tourism Queen International 2009 and Joannabelle Ng, Miss Universe Malaysia 2009.

Miss Universe Malaysia national director, Andrea Fonseka said the casting at 1Borneo Hypermall which started yesterday and ends today will look for a beauty with brain to compete with other girls in Malaysia to represent Malaysia to the world contest next year.

Casting will be from 11am until 7pm.

“We are looking for young ladies between the ages of 18 and 27 as of February 01 2012 and at least 163 cm tall. The contestants must be single and non-Muslims.

“We’re crowning Miss Universe Malaysia a year in advance, to allow for more time to make her shine before she competes for Miss Universe.

“This is what they do in other countries and we must do the same to compete in this most prestigious event,” Fonseka said.

Fonseka who had invited Cassandra Patrick, Joannabelle Ng, Miss Universe Malaysia 2010 Nadine Ann Thomas, Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 Deborah Henry  and Malaysian actor, Hans Isaac to the press conference yesterday stressed that she had invested a lot to hold the casting in Sabah because of the number of potentials.

She believed that organising any beauty pageant without going to Sabah is a mistake.

“We call on all beautiful Sabahan girls to participate in this casting and get a free makeover from A Cut Above and also Xpression Master makeup artist using Rimmel London Makeup.

“Sabah is very special and we do not charge any registration fee and all of our girls will get their pictures taken by our professional photographer from FotoworX for free,” she added.

In January this year Fonseka shared her vision to inject a new life into the Miss Universe Malaysia pageant by successfully introducing the ‘HIP, URBAN, RELEVANT, REAL’ revamp.

She intends to improve the pageant further by introducing a new format in 2011, enabling Malaysians to compete on equal terms with noted heavyweight countries like Mexico and Venezuela.

The search for the 2012 candidates has started since February this year through road shows, a reality television programme and casting calls that have been held nationwide with Sabah the final stop.
