TAWAU: A policeman from the Narcotics branch died from electrocution while chasing after a wanted drug peddler in Kampung Kurnia Jaya, Batu 4, Jalan Apas, here, yesterday.

Lance corporal Mohamad Fadzly Haneda Aden, 30, died at the Tawau General Hospital after he was rushed there by his colleagues and villagers following the 12.50pm incident.

Tawau police chief ACP Ibrahim Chin when met at the hospital’s emergency ward, said Fadzly together with a team from the Narcotics branch had gone to the village to look for the drug peddler, who was high on the police wanted list.

He said when they bumped into the 30-year-old suspect, the man fled towards a row of illegal squatter houses which had many illegal electricity wire connections.

“While chasing the suspect, the victim lifted some of the wires and was electrocuted.

He fell unconscious and was rushed to the hospital.”

Ibrahim said the suspect, however, was arrested by Fadzly’s colleagues.

Fadzly who was transferred to the Tawau district police headquarters in April last year, left behind a wife and two children aged one and three.

Ibrahim said police would render appropriate assistance to Fadzly’s family, including arranging his burial.

He also urged Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd to act against the problem of illegal electrical connections as it could endanger people’s lives. — Bernama
