KUCHING: The first Sarawak Legislative Assembly sitting following the 10th state election is expected to be held in mid June, Speaker Datuk Seri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar said today.

“I cannot confirm because I have yet to receive an official notice from the state government to effect the sitting,” he told reporters after attending the swearing-in ceremony of 12 assistant ministers at the new Sarawak State Legislative Assembly building here today.

The State Assembly was dissolved on March 21, paving the way for the 10th state election which was held on April 16 after nomination on April 6.

Asfia said the next State Assembly sitting must be called within 120 days from the date of dissolution.

“That will give us not beyond July (to call for the sitting),” he said.

In the election, Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) retained its two-thirds majority.

BN won 55 of the 71 seats in the state legislative assembly, with 35 going to Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), eight to Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and six each to Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).

In the opposition, DAP won 12 seats, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) three  while an independent won the Pelagus seat. – Bernama
