KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian High Commission in New Zealand is seeking to meet 10 Malaysians arrested by the New Zealand authorities on April 26 for allegedly trying to smuggle in methamphetamine worth RM23.6 million in their shoes.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement here yesterday that under New Zealand law, detainees would need to give their consent before Malaysian High Commission officials can visit them.

“The Malaysian High Commission is in contact with the New Zealand authorities to ensure all necessary assistance is rendered to the Malaysians,” it said.

Two Malaysians were found to be allegedly carrying methamphetamine in their shoes after being questioned and searched at the airport, while the rest were tracked down by Customs officers and the police after they had left the airport. — Bernama
