SIBU: Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee wants to be seen as a local boy, advocating simplicity in his approach to help solve people’s problems.

“I am here to work for the people and find solutions to their problems. I don’t want them to portray me as “orang yang dihormati,” Dr Annuar told The Borneo Post yesterday after officiating at the motivational talk cum launching of ‘Elite Class Programme 2011’ at SK Abang Ali here.

For that, he hoped the ceremonial stuff would be reduced or done away with since the focus should be on helping the people.

This year, the school aims to better its performance, targeting 20 pupils to score 5As in their coming UPSR examination from seven last year.

The down-to-earth assemblyman was asked what he meant by doing away with formalities in his speech earlier.

“I am still the local boy here and wish to be portrayed that way,” Dr Annuar chuckled, believing in delivering people-centric services to the rakyat.

To the pupils, he urged them to uphold the school’s academic excellence.

To this, he added: “I want pupils to come to school to obtain good results and not merely be contented with marginal passes. The world outside the school gate is very competitive and it is good results that provide students with the competitive advantage.”

Dr Annuar reminded them that it was education that would provide them a better future.

School headmaster Mahmud Ahad called on the pupils to strive for academic excellence and achieve better performance in this year’s UPSR.

He recalled that in 2009, they achieved excellent results where 14 pupils scored 5As. To motivate pupils in obtaining good UPSR results, he disclosed that the school alumni was giving out cash incentives of RM500 each to those who achieved 5As in the public examination.

SK Abang Ali has 847 pupils and 59 teachers.

Twenty pupils from the primary six classes have been selected into the elite group.
