KUCHING: The state will be sending 25 museum staff including a ngajat dancer to showcase Sarawak culture during the national-level Museum Day celebration in Negeri Sembilan from tomorrow until May 24.

Various programmes will be held during the celebration like games, seminar, workshop and community-based project.

Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar is expected to open the event this Thursday.

State Museum director Ipoi Datan said that Museum Day was declared an international celebration on May 18 annually by the International Council of Museum (ICOM) and it has been celebrated in Malaysia since 1977.

“Every year we will organise Museum Day celebration based on the theme given by ICOM. This year’s theme will be ‘Museum and Memory’,” said Ipoi during a flag handing over by Assistant Tourism Minister Mong Dagang.

He added that last year, Sabah played host while next year would be Pahang.

“We are trying to bid for Sarawak to host the event in 2013. On average, some 800 people attend it annually.

“It allows visitors to explore our culture and help promote it to all Malaysians,” he said.

The state last hosted Museum Day in 2003.
