80 handicraft dealers to participate in craft exhibition

MIRI: Eighty local arts and handicrafts wholesalers and producers would be taking part in the Malaysian crafts exhibition and sales to be held at Miri Handicraft Centre here.

Jointly organised by Miri City Council and Malaysian Craft Council, the event expected able to generate bigger revenue this year.

“Last year we received a good response not only from the locals but also visitors and tourists from Brunei. The revenue was around RM400,000 last year. I believed we would be able to achieve RM500,000 this year,” said political secretary to Chief Minister Cr Kijan Toynbee yesterday.

The five-day event will start from May 20 – 25 and Kijan anticipated that the event which is part of Miri May Fest would be a hit not only among the locals but also tourists including visitors from Brunei.

“Apart from locals, quite a number of participants are from Kelantan, Selangor, Terengganu and Malacca including Sabah,” she said adding that most of the participants from the Peninsula would be selling batik.

Apart from selling and exhibiting local arts and handicrafts, there would be demonstration on batik, beading and weaving works.

There will also be workshop on local culture, tradition and heritage for students.

Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin is expected to launch the event around 3pm tomorrow (May 20).
