MIRI: SMK St Columba student Arissa Rachel James will represent the Miri Division at the state-level Public Speaking Competition from May 19-20 in Betong.

She won the district-level competition on March 26, which saw Kolej Tun Haji Bujang and SMK Lutong come in second and third.

“We are particularly proud of Arissa, a top Form 3 student who is no stranger to public speaking and debating,” said principal Robinette Tiong in a press statement.

Arissa was public speaking champion in 2010 as well as a member of the 2010 champion state debating team.

This year, she was the second overall best speaker for the Junior Category: Form 1 to 3 at the Sixth Annual Swinburne World Schools Debating Championship from April 4-7.

She also won an iPod for a poem she sent to the recent British Council Connecting Schools’ Competition.

Meanwhile, St Columba’s Drama Team emerged second with their original drama entitled ‘The Invasion’ at the divisional-level Inter-school English Drama Competition on April 3-4.

The school also won the Best Script Award (John Bosco Yu) and Most Promising Actor Prize (Jasmine Wee).

St Columba’s Choral Speaking Team was also first runner-up at the Inter-school English Choral Speaking Competition held at SMK Baru on March 26.
