MAKE IT GREENER: Yong wants local authorities to take good care of recreation parks.

KUCHING: Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong wants the local authorities to take better care of recreation parks within their jurisdiction.

She said residents of Kali Garden/Supreme Garden in her constituency had complained that the recreation park in their residential area was not decently maintained.

Recently, a resident saw 50 trees taken to the park but many of them had gone without a trace and only a few had been planted.

“More trees should be planted to give a better environment for park goers. The park looks so bare and the trees all look sick,” she said.

Yong, who is Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak treasurer, pointed out that it was the obligation of local councils to provide and ensure a greener environment for all city dwellers.

She said local councils here should emulate city councils in Singapore and Australia which had done a good job on maintaining public parks.

“Also, the residents there requested to have dustbins placed in the park. At the moment, there is no lighting, resulting in total darkness at night,” she said.

She added that she would write to the relevant authorities as soon as possible to seek remedy.
