KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad continues to respond well to treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN) where he has been warded for chest infection.

Apart from continued intravenous antibiotic treatment and intensive chest physiotherapy, Dr Mahathir is also being put through an exercise routine involving walking around the ward since Friday.

His special officer Sufi Yusoff said the doctors were happy with his rate of response to treatment, noting that his appetite had also improved significantly.

In his email to Bernama, Sufi said Dr Mahathir would continue to be treated at IJN to allow doctors to closely monitor his progress, and visitations were limited to family members.

He also said that Dr Mahathir and wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali had expressed their gratitude and thanked all well-wishers for their thoughts and prayers. Dr Mahathir was admitted to IJN on May 18 for treatment of a chest infection after having developed fever and cough. — Bernama
