FATAL COLLISION: Paramedics prepare to check the deceased for possible signs of life.

SAMARAHAN: A final-year Mara Skills Institute (IKM) student was killed, while another seriously injured, when their motorcycle was involved in a collision with a tanker yesterday evening.

The deceased, a 22-year-old from Sibu identified only as George, was heading back to his campus dormitory in Semariang together with the other victim, a 21-year-old from Lawas, and two others when the accident occurred near a roundabout around 6.45pm.

The four, who are all final-year IKM students, had spent the day in Samarahan looking for attachment jobs as part of their three-month practical training.

The two uninjured students told reporters that they were riding in front of the victims when they heard a crash coming from behind them just as they neared the roundabout.

“When we stopped and turned around to see what had happened, both of them were already lying on the road next to their motorcycle,” they said.

One of them said he believed the pair was involved in a collision with a tanker, which was travelling behind them moments before.

Paramedics summoned to the scene certified the 22-year-old’s death before rushing the surviving victim, who sustained chest injuries, to the Sarawak General Hospital where he was subsequently admitted into the Red Zone.

District traffic police personnel were also on hand to investigate the fatal accident, which brought traffic flow to a crawl, before transporting the body of the deceased to the mortuary.

In a separate accident in Kuching, a China national sustained body injuries after he was knocked down by a passing car in Hui Sing Garden yesterday evening.

The victim, in his 20s, was said to have been crossing the road when he was struck by a Perodua Kenari around 6.30pm.

He was sent to a private hospital and treated for his injuries, which were described as non-life threatening.
