KUALA LUMPUR: The magistrates’ court yesterday acquitted and discharged a 57-year-old trader who was charged with extorting RM5,000 from another trader at a night market two years ago.

Magistrate Parvin Hamidah Natchiar handed down the decision after finding that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against Daood Gulam Mohideen Sha Jahan at the end of the prosecution’s case.

Daood Gulam, 57, was charged with extorting the money from one Yap F oo Kwee, 39, for the return of two business lots at the Taman Sri Bintang night market, Kepong, Sentul, at 7.30pm on June 20, 2009.

He was charged under Section 384 of the Penal Code which carried a jail sentence of up to ten years or fine or whipping or any two of such punishments, if found guilty. — Bernama
