LAWAS: Lawas Member of Parliament Datuk Henry Sum Agong called for Public Vigilante Corps (Rela) members to revive traditional patrol practice to help nip criminal activities in the bud at the village level.

“It will help check social ills and assist in crime prevention in their respective areas,” he said at the launch of the 1Rela, 1Malaysia programme at Lawas Indoor Stadium earlier this week.

Such patrols act as the frontline and early intervention measure to keep public security, and Henry hoped that the group will grow from 8,000 to 10,000 members in the district by end of this year.

Calling on more to join this uniformed entity, he said each member should also be instilled with values of high integrity in discharging their duties to uphold the interest of the country and the government of the day.

Also present at the function were deputy director-general of Rela Malaysia, Lieutenant General Datuk Mustafa Ibrahim, state director, Brigadier-General Hamfatullah Syawal Hamdan, community leaders and local Rela leaders.
