GEORGE TOWN: The High Court here yesterday set June 7 to hear an application by Teoh Bee Eng and her husband, Joseph Teoh Boon Aun, to save their dogs from being “put to sleep”.

Deputy Registrar Mohd Rosly Mohamed Nawi set the date in chambers when the case came up before him, a few hours after the Teoh couple filed the appeal yesterday.

The couple filed the appeal through the legal firm of Messrs Jerald Gomez & Associate at the High Court counter about 12.50pm.

Lawyer M Morgan, who represented the Penang Municipal Council(MPPP), said pending hearing of the couple’s appeal, the dog would be kept at the North East district office of the Veterinary Service Department.

Earlier, during the more than three-hour wait outside the court room, Bee Eng was seen in tears and only smiled and hugged her husband after being informed by their lawyer that their dogs would be safe.

The incident started on Jan 5, when Sullivan Maurice, 50, from Ireland, died after he was attacked by two dogs while taking pictures of durian trees in the farm belonging to the Teoh couple at Teluk Bahang.

Last April 4, the Balik Pulai Magistrate’s Court fined Teoh RM8,000 for keeping their dogs without collars and licence.

Magistrate Mohd Hidayat Wahab also ordered the dogs to be sent to MPPP veterinary department to be destroyed, disposed of or dealt with in any other action deemed appropriate.
