KOTA KINABALU: Former State Unduk Ngadau queen Crystel Eve Huminodun M. Majinbon has joined the Miss Earth beauty pageant in support of the effort to send a ‘green’ message to the younger generation.

Crystel does not see her status as a former beauty queen to be an advantage in the competition, but she relishes the experience to show the other side of her to the public.

“Being the winner of last year’s state level Unduk Ngadau is not an advantage for me in this competition because Unduk Ngadau is focusing more on traditional and cultural activities, while Miss Earth is different,” she said.

“I participate in this competition because the objectives and activities are close to my heart. I have a very strong interest in environmental activities as we Sabahans are born with natural resources and it is our responsibility to look after them,” she said.

Crystel, who has been selected as one of the 12 finalists in Miss Earth Sabah 2011, said she did a lot of reading to prepare for the competition.

Another Miss Earth aspirant, Pathlyn Leosie M. Mikat, said she takes part for the experience.

The 19-year-old upper six student of SMK Kota Marudu said this is the first time she is joining Miss Earth pageant after being encouraged by the organizer a few weeks ago.

She said she won Ratu Pesta Jagung in 2010 and represented Kota Marudu district in the Unduk Ngadau pageant this year.

“I hope to learn something new in Miss Earth as the aim of this competition is not based on physical beauty only,” she said.

“I also hope to make friends with the other contestants and enjoy my school holiday to the maximum before sit for my STPM (Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia) exam this year,” she added.

The other finalists are Cheryl Joanne Chan, Deenah Diana Deliman, Dewina Petrus Guriting, Eliza Tang, Hannevy W. Harry, Kieren Laurent Simon, Olivia Vun, Sandra Devie A/P R. Mohana, Venessa Samantha Manih and Maylesthelyn Ley Matius.
