Najib to open national Quran reciters assembly tonight

KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will open the 54th National-level Quran Reciters Assembly, here, tonight.

Najib, accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, will hear the 29 male and female participants recite verses from the Quran at the assembly themed, ‘1Malaysia 1Ummah’.

The Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) in a statement said a pavilion modelled after Moroccan architecture had been set up for the event to be held at the Sarawak Islamic Complex.

As for the 1Malaysia theme, Jakim said, it would be reflected in the colours and motifs representing the various races including Malay, Chinese, Indian and Dayak.

Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin is expected to give away the prizes to the winners at the closing ceremony on June 17.

The champion in the men’s and women’s categories will each receive RM15,000 cash and a Haj package.

They will also represent Malaysia at the International Quran Reciters Assembly. — Bernama
