KUCHING: Dr Johnical Rayong (BN-Engkilili) suggests that the wild crocodiles in Skrang Hilir and Batang Air Hilir be culled as they are posing great danger to the local people.

He said that crocodiles in these two areas were so numerous that they
could be easily spotted at night.

“As such, I would like to call on the authority to take the necessary steps by giving the necessary licence to hunt these ferocious reptiles,” Dr Rayong said when debating the opening speech of the Head of State here yesterday.

He added that if the hunting of these crocodiles were legalised, the local people could earn some extra income from the sale of the skin and meat.

Dr Rayong added that the people of those two areas were now scared to use the rivers for washing and other activities, afraid that crocodiles might attack them as there had been many attacks of late.

He made the suggestion following a proposal made by Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) general manager Wilfred Landong recently that the state government amend the Wildlife Protection Ordinance so that crocodiles in the wild whose numbers were increasing, could be culled.

It is said that other rivers in the state infested with crocodiles are Batang Lupar, Batang Sadong, Sg Sarawak Kanan and Sg Sarawak Kiri.

On the political front, Dr Rayong who joined SUPP last year believed that his party would be able to win back all its seats that were lost in the recent state election.

“I also believe that the rocket (DAP) will lose its fuel and fall to the ground in the next state election,”he said to a strong thumbing from the other BN backbenchers.

In the last state election, SUPP lost 13 out of 19 seats to the DAP and PKR.
