KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) has taken the necessary measures to prevent the Sabah Grid System from total collapse and to counter a shortfall of 150 MW (Megawatt) due to insufficient power generation, since yesterday.
Its strategic relations and media senior manager, Mizal Khan, said the shortfall was due to the unavailability of several major generation sets at the IPP Rugading (Ranhill Powertron II) GT1A (65MW); IPP Seguntor (10MW) and Kinabio (10MW); IPP Libaran (45MW); IPP SPC (Sandakan Power Corporation) DG4 (8MW); IPP ARLT DG3 (11MW) and Patau-Patau Power Station, Labuan GT3 (30MW)
Demand Side Management (DSM) had to be carried out in order to stabilize the State Grid System, he said in a statement, and added that manual load shedding would be carried out if the measures were still inadequate,
Mizal said Petronas haD currently shut down the flow of gas to all the gas-fired power stations throughout Sabah in order to carry out DOSH inspection from June 23-28.
As of June 2011, the demand for electricity from consumers throughout Sabah has peaked to 808MW.
“Further improvements of the situation are expected when the Rugading GT1A (Ranhill Powertron II) and other generating sets are operational.
“The weekend’s low load demand will also help the situation and it is expected that no DSM and load shedding is to be carried out,” he said, assuring that SESB would take all the necessary measures to minimize the impact of power disruption to its customers during this gas curtailment period.
In another development, Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Chin Fah Kui yesterday presented MS ISO 14001:2004 certificate to the Patau Patau Power Station, the 5S Award to SESB’s Store Department in Kolombong, 5S certificate to Wisma SESB, Company Role Model Award to the Human Resource Ministry, Top Achiever Award (Total Telephone Calls) to the CMC personnel, Excellence Certificate to Security and Intelligence Department.
The certification and award giving ceremony was held after the minister delivered his keynote address at the SESB staff gathering here yesterday.
Chin urged SESB staff members to continue with the effort of rendering the best services to the consumers in the State.
He also launched the utility company’s Energy Efficiency portal (www.sesb.com.my).
Also present were SESB managing director Datuk Baharin Din and other senior officers.
