TAWAU: The government hopes to reduce traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers with the introduction of EBA II and SD2+ equipment to the traffic police contingent in the state.

Malaysia Traffic Police director SAC Datuk Abd Aziz Yusof said since the introduction of the equipment in 2009, the detection of drunk drivers had increased.

“In 2009 there were 163 cases and 158 were charged in court. In 2010, 518 drunk drivers were charged in court,” he said yesterday after a course to teach traffic police personnel here on how to use the equipment.

Abd Aziz said it is hoped that the equipment would be fully utilised by the state police traffic contingent as they are very effective and the traffic units will be able to perform better.

He also advised drivers not to drink as they are not only putting themselves in danger but also innocent members of the public and motorists.

Meanwhile, Abd Aziz presented certificates to selected traffic personnel who participated in the course yesterday at the PERKEP hall.
