KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government will soon announce its decision on the possibility of reviewing the electricity tariff in the state that has remained the same for the past 25 years.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said he would have a state cabinet meeting to discuss the issue and the implications the possible revision would have on the people.

“I will bring this matter up at the cabinet meeting and then I will ask the (state) minister in charge Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah (Industrial Development Minister) to make an announcement on the state government’s decision soon,” he told reporters during his visit to the TV3 Jom Heboh carnival here today.

On Thursday, Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui said its ministry was looking into the possibility of reviewing Sabah’s electricity tariff as Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) was facing financial problems in generating enough electricity to meet the state’s increasing demand, due to rising costs.

According to Chin, SESB was suffering losses every year (5 sen for every unit of electricity it sold to consumers) and reviewing the tariff was one of the steps the ministry was looking into to ensure SESB could operate on its own cash flow.

On TV3’s Jom Heboh carnival, Musa hoped apart from Kota Kinabalu, it would also be held at other venues in Sabah so that the people in places like the east coast would have an opportunity to be a part of it.

According to him, the carnival proved to be a good event to bring the people closer as well as an opportunity for families to spend time together.– BERNAMA
