200 to vie for golf challenge trophies in Miri tomorrow

MIRI: A total of 200 golfers will take part in the 8th Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Alfred Jabu Golf Challenge Trophy (DPTS) and the 6th Senator Dato Sri Empiang Jabu Golf Challenge Trophy (DS) at the Miri Golf Club (KGM) tomorrow.

About 80 of the golfers are members of the Dayak Golf Association of Sarawak (DGA) from Miri and Bintulu, Labuan and Kuala Lumpur.

The tournament will be divided into six sections – Open Section for KGM members, DGA-for members vying for the DPTS Trophy, Ladies- vying for DS Trophy, Senior section for golfers above 55, Invited Guest, Junior Section for KGM and DGA Juniors golfers.

Organising chairman Robert Inging, who is also DGA deputy president, said all men golfers with handicap 24 and below, who were either members of KGM and DGA, would be invited to play for the DPTS (Dr) Alfred Jabu Trophy.

The ladies, with handicap 30 and below, will vie for the Dato Sri Empiang Trophy.

“The winner of the hole-in-one for the par 3 will be rewarded with a Proton Saga donated by Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom.

“Other Novelty Prizes includes nearest to pin, nearest to line and longest drive,” said Robert.

DGA president Gerald Rentap will be leading the Dayak golfers to battle for the DPTS Golf Challenge Trophy.

Meanwhile, Mawan is expected to head the Invited Guests Section when Jabu and his wife Empiang will not be competing.

Last year’s defending champion Asa Laba and six others, Protasi Ayor (2004), Sipol Ambun (2005), Jilan Jenggie (2006), Joseph Jinggut (2007) Benny Rajah (2008), and Anchum Melina (2009) will be taking part.

In the Ladies Section, Helen Ayu will defend the title.

Jabu, the Deputy Chief Minister, is expected to officiate at the closing cum prizes giving ceremony.
