KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Youth and Sports Ministry is targeting two million youths for the Youth Assembly at Putrajaya next year.

The week-long event will most probably be held in May, according to Federal Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Sabery at the closing of the state level Premier Youth Convention here yesterday.

He said more than one million youths turned up for the 1Million Youth Assembly that was held in Putrajaya last May.

“According to statistics, a total of 1.1 million youths were at the event this year. Out of the number, 1,200 were Sabahans,” he said.

He said the huge turnout and participation from youths from all over the country is a testament of their confidence in the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

He said BN was mindful of Sabah’s contribution in the last election that ensures BN continue to rule the country.

“BN is ruling and has continued to rule because of the people of Sabah. It is imperative that we go down and repay the people for their contribution,” he said.

He said the ‘repayment’ need not be in the form of monetary benefits, but stressed the importance of seeing the people and thinking what is best.

One of the first changes that would benefit Sabah, he said, is the appointment of a Sabahan for the post of director at the State Federal Youth and Sports Department.

The ministry also presented an allocation of RM50,000 to the Sabah Youth Council (SYC) yesterday. It was received by SYC president Kevin Lim.

Also present at the event were State Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Peter Pang and Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Jahid Jahim.
