History, geography least popular – VC

KOTA KINABALU: History and geography are two of the least popular subjects in secondary schools, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice Chancellor Datuk Seri Dr Kamaruzaman Hj Ampon said.

Both teachers and students are not interested in the two subjects which are often studied by those in the Arts stream, he said when opening the History and Geography Education seminar at UMS, yesterday.

In his speech which was delivered by Deputy Vice Chancellor of Students’ Affair and Alumni, Dr Kasim Mansur, Kamaruzaman said all this would change as the government had made history a compulsory examination subject to pass in 2013.

“It is expected that the subject’s position on a school’s co-curriculum chart will change,” he said.

According to Kamaruzaman, history must be taken seriously by all quarters as it could not be denied that the subject is a channel in instilling patriotism among the people.

Geography, he stressed, is equally important.

On the seminar itself, Kamaruzaman pointed out that it was a platform to generate ideas as well as improve the teaching of the two subjects.
