LONDON: Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, wife of Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, has received an invitation to become one of the patrons of the Asian University of Women (AUW) in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

The invitation was contained in a letter sent to her by AUW chancellor Cherie Blair, wife of former British prime minister Tony Blair.

“InsyaAllah I’ll accept her invitation and reply to her when I return to Malaysia,” Rosmah told Malaysian journalists here.

Rosmah was accompanying her husband on a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom (UK) which concluded Friday night.

Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina serves as the chief patron of AUW.

She is joined by, among others, Italian politician Emma Bonino, former member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong and head of Hong Kong Civil Service Anson Chan, and former United States secretary of state Dr Condoleezza Rice.

Rosmah said she felt honoured to have been requested to join such a distinguished group of prominent women.

She said she had travelled to Dhaka to deliver a keynote address at an event organised by the university whose students come from 12 different countries throughout the region.

“Mrs Blair had said then that she wanted me to join other prominent women in making the university a success,” Rosmah said.

The university caters to students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

Most of the young women are the first in their family to attend higher education. — Bernama
