TAWAU: Sixty-five vacancies are available in the state’s Fire and Rescue Department which will be taking new intakes in September this year.

State director Nordin Pauzi during a working visit to the Tawau station yesterday, said the vacant posts included those in Tawau zone.

He said new intakes would undergo four to five months of training before being sent to other zones as fire and rescue personnel.

Meanwhile, Nordin said Tawau recorded 72 fires between January and June this year with losses amounting to RM6.2 millions, while there were 87 rescue cases.

For the same period, he said the state recorded 195 cases involving structures and 216 fires.

Eleven deaths and 935 rescue cases were recorded during the same period, Nordin said, adding this was his first visit to Tawau after being posted to the state as director.

He wanted to see that the mission and physical state of the station are in place.

He said Tawau is developing fast and the risk is high, so the need for him to ensure that the team and standby spirit of the unit are ready for anything here.

“I want to ensure the members are active and enforce the regulations by checking on buildings to ensure owners abide by the regulations,” he said.

Apart from that, he said he also wanted to ensure the operation and cooperation between the personnel and volunteers are good while affirming that he will continue the ‘Skim Teman Pili Bomba’.
