KUCHING: The Health Department will hire local and foreign specialist doctors on short-term contractual basis for hospitals in Limbang, Sarikei, Kapit and Sri Aman.

Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) director Dr Rahim Abdullah said the hiring was a ‘temporary measure’.

“Our focus in the 10th Malaysia Plan is to build a specialist department in all the said hospitals. Efforts have been undertaken by the Health Department to provide these hospitals with specialist doctors.

“Firstly, we would focus on acquiring contractual specialist doctors to fill up the requirements as we step up efforts to hire local specialists on a permanent basis,” Dr Rahim told a press conference after the opening of the Malaysian Dietitians Association (MDA) Scientific Conference and 17th Annual General Meeting at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday.

Among those present at the event, which was officiated at by Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, were MDA president Tan Yoke Hwa, Malaysian Physiotherapy Association (MPA) president Yew Su Fan and MDA vice president Shanaz FH Mawji, who is also the organising chairperson.

Stating that the recruitment started recently, Dr Rahim said these specialists would be offered a two-year contract.

Upon expiry, their performances would be evaluated before offering them another two-year contract.

“So far, we have acquired a few midwife specialists and we will continue our efforts to rope in other specialist doctors as well.”
