PROUD MOMENT: The SMK St Mary choir with their trophy.

KUCHING: SMK St Mary beat 11 other secondary schools to emerge champion in the ‘Inter Secondary School Choir Competition Kuching and Kota Samarahan Level’ held in SMK Siburan at Mile 17th here on Thursday.

The school also took first place in the ‘Rukun Negara Club’ State Level choir competition held at the Islamic Information Centre on July 16.

According to St Mary’s principal, Prisca Chambers, the school choir which consists of 32 members from the Form 1 and Form 2 classes had worked hard to do well in the competitions.

Since the girls were new members, they took two months to practise for the Inter Secondary School Choir competition.

“They were very dedicated and disciplined. They deserve to win,” she told The Borneo Post yesterday.

She also expressed her gratitude to dedicated choir teacher Tan Kia New who had worked hard to make sure the students did well during their performance.

Prisca hoped the students would remain in the choir and continue to take interest in singing to prepare for more competitions in the coming years.

“The choir is part of our music programme which include an orchestra, dancing, and the playing of traditional musical instruments like the ‘cak lempong’ and ‘gamelan’.

“We strongly encourage our students to take part in this programme because it brings positive self-development, build self-confidence, self-discipline and teamwork. Music is a healthy pasttime or hobby for teenage girls,” she pointed out.

SMK St Teresa and SMK Green Road won second and third placing respectively in the inter secondary school choir competitions.
