Elderly in critical condition after drinking weedkiller attempt


SIBU: An elderly man who attempted to commit suicide by drinking excessive amounts of weedkiller in a public toilet at Central Market here is now in critical condition.

The incident occurred yesterday at around 9am.

After downing the harmful liquid, the man, in his late 70’s was said to have walked out of the toilet, leaving behind the bottle.

He then headed to a friend’s stall at the market and handed him a few hundred ringgit.

The elderly man asked the friend to hand the money to his family if anything should happen to him. Sensing something was amiss, the friend called the man’s family to find out if everything was all right.

According to the friend, he suspected the suicide attempt could be due to family problems.

A cleaner found a bottle of weedkiller in the toilet and alerted security guards at the market, suspecting someone had drunk it.

Seeing green stains on his mouth, the guards stopped the man who was on his way back to the toilet.

A grandson who arrived at the market checked on his grandfather and tried to make him vomit up the weedkiller.

Rescue 991 later arrived and sent the man to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital here.

In an unrelated incident, a foreign worker gulped down weedkiller after quarrelling with his girlfriend.

The afternoon incident on Friday occurred at his workplace, a sawmill in Rantau Panjang.

A colleague noticed the incident and alerted his superior.

The 25-year-old man was sent to the hospital here where he is warded and is reported to be in stable condition.
