Sharing and giving during Ramadan month for all

KUCHING: Ramadan is a month of sharing and giving among other things, and it is hoped the well-to-do will share with the less fortunate.

“Sarawak is a model for this sharing culture, where people live in peace and harmony despite having different religion and race.

“The Ramadan bazaars organised during this time are not only participated by Muslims but non-Muslims as well. I hope the bazaar will benefit everyone and be able to foster mutual understanding,” said Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg when launching the Ramadan Bazaar at The Hills Shopping Mall on Friday night.

Ramadan Bazaar at The Hills is organised with a touch of ‘souk’, a traditional Arabian marketplace offering a diverse range of goods from fashion to food. It buzzes with cultural activities featuring dancers and musicians rather like the legendary Arabian Nights brought to life in the form of colourful performances.

According to general manager Gabriel Hii, this was the first-ever Ramadan Bazaar organised by the mall since its inception in late 2009.

“Shoppers will be able to redeem ‘sampul raya’ (raya envelopes) and fashion shawls of various colours during the entire fasting month from Aug 1.

“We have also prepared a surau and Baitulmal Zakat booth for our Muslim shoppers to fulfill their obligations during the Ramadan month,” he said.

During the launch of the bazaar, 30  children from Kompleks Anak Yatim Laila Taib (Peryatim) were each given baju raya and shoes sponsored by Faby Outlet, duit raya from International Times and dinner sponsored by Kim Bay Restaurant.

Other sponsors of the launch included Appetit Cupcakes, Old Town White Coffee, Marybrown Chicken, Delifrance and Petra Enterprise.

Also present were Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department,  Datin Fatimah Abdullah, Semariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali and DBKU Commission secretariat division head Ramona Ariffin.

Entrepreneurs are encouraged to join the Ramadan Bazaar. More information can be obtained by calling The Hills at 082-253310.
