SIBU: People are finding that the weather here is too hot to handle, with the temperature soaring to 35 degrees Celsius yesterday.

Many complain of being easily irritated in the heat, and the Meteorological Department is forecasting no good news – the heat at 35 degrees Celsius will stay throughout the week although there may be isolated showers.

A forecaster from the department, when contacted, said yesterday the heat had soared since Monday and would stay.

“There will be no rain in major cities and towns because the isolated showers will only occur in the interior, like Belaga, Mulu and Kapit.

“In Kuching, Sibu and Miri, for example, there will be no rain.”

She said there could also be light showers in the coastal regions but not in the towns and cities.

On why the freak hot weather seemed to linger on, the forecaster said there were two factors.

“It is the South West Monsoon season – the months normally with very little rain in Sarawak.

“Then, there are two tropical storms over Borneo Island – Nockten tropical storm that lashed through the Philippines since last week, and now, the Mufia tropical storm off the coast of the Philippines has formed.”

She said the two storms had sucked all the water vapours from Borneo, and Sarawak was cloudless now.

“The drought will stay until September when the North East Monsoon sets in.”

Meanwhile, the Nock-ten storm has killed 52 persons in the Philippines since last Thursday.

Adding salt to injury is the Mufi a tropical storm that has formed in the sea, bringing more rain to the Philippines and triggering a tornado.

Nock-ten is named after a Laotian bird while Mufia after a Chinese fl ower.

An average of 20 storms and typhoons, many of them deadly, hit the Philippines annually. Nock-ten is the tenth this year.
