MIRI: Four hundred and seventy-six people were arrested for their involvement in drugs in Miri in the first six months of this year.

In the same period, Miri Police Narcotics division investigated 349 drugs related cases from Jan 1 to July 31.

Miri police chief ACP Jamaludin Ibrahim disclosed this during the ‘Program Polis Bersama Masyarakat’ held at Miri Centre Point yesterday. Among those present was ASP Allie.

According to Jamaludin, these people were arrested in connection with cases involving drug offences under the various sections of the Dangerous Drug Act.

Meanwhile, on the meet the community programme, he said response and feedback from the people here had been poor.

“Probably the community does not understand the needs of the police in reaching out to the community and probably has not received enough information about this programme,” Jamaludin said to members of the press.

He said a similar programme would be held at Emart in Tudan from 2pm to 5pm on Aug 20.

“We urge members of the public to attend the programme with information on crime related cases, ” he added.

Earlier, Jamaludin disclosed that Miri Police needed 70 Police Reserve Volunteers, which currently has only six persons.

He said applicants, between 18 to 28 years old with PMR qualification, were encouraged to apply to help police do the beat, general duty and roadblock operations.

The allowance is RM4.30 per hour.

The main aim was to curb crime, he added.
