SIBU: The elderly were thrilled to find that Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee had turned up at their doorsteps to bring them Ramadan joy.

The UK-trained medical specialist with a heart for the elderly braved the heat wave to visit old folks above 80 years old in his constituency.

The cardiologist visited five houses yesterday.

“There are about 30 of those above 80 years of age in Nangka constituency, and we are paying them a visit, starting today (yesterday).

“We want them to know their contributions to society will always be remembered and that they are not forgotten during this fasting month,” Dr Annuar told The Borneo Post after the visit.

He said this was one of the activities under the ‘Hulur Kasih’ programme organised by Nangka Welfare Committee, headed by Abang Morni Abang Zainuddin collaborating with Nangka Women and Family Committee, led by Wan Fatimah Narawi and Nangka PBB Youth Wing.

He disclosed other activities including door-to-door visit to the less fortunate, single mothers, new Muslim converts, and breaking fast with orphans.

Dr Annuar started their visit around 9am accompanied by Abang Morni, Abang Hashim Abang Zainuddin (in charge of the visiting activity), Nangka Welfare Committee secretary Ali Mat and treasurer Sharifah Faridah Wan Hamid.

The assemblyman said they brought gifts for the elderly in the hope of lifting their spirit.

“We must respect our elders and acknowledge their past contribution,” he reiterated.

On the construction of a futsal field in Kampung Nangka, he said he did not foresee any problem and that the existing Kampung Nangka playground would make way for the new sporting facility.

“We are waiting for Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to release that piece of land.”
