Church holds dinner to celebrate priests’ ordination

SERIAN: The St Theresa’s Parish Council here held a dinner on Aug 1 to celebrate Rev Fr James Meehan and Rev Fr Paul Herry 52nd and 8th anniversary respectively of Priestly Ordination.

Members of the Parish Council and their spouses attended the dinner.

In their speeches, both Fr Meehan and Fr Herry thanked the loving parishioners for their love and care.

Fr Herry will be leaving for Rome for further study in September and will be back in June 2012 after the first semester.

He is not sure whether he will be back to Serian again.

Earlier in his speech, the chairman of the Parish Council Mr Dennis Sung thanked the Rev Fathers for their sacrifices to the people of God.

He also thanked chairman of Special Function Committee John Jubang, treasurer Simon Yong and Marianne Lai for the arrangement and also the participants for the function.

Fr Meehan was born in November, 1933 in Glasgow, Scotland where he was ordained priest on July 12, 1959 at Mill Hill in London and was appointed to Sarawak on the same day.

He set sail for Sarawak on Oct 16, 1959 and arrived at St Francis Xavier Church, Kanowit on Nov 20, 1959.

He served in Kanowit, Bintangor, Kota Padawan and three times in the Serian Parish: first time in 1962-65, second time in 1966-71 and third time from June, 1986 till now.

Rev Fr Paul Herry, from Kampung Mapu, in the Mongkos area, Serian was ordained a priest on July 5, 2003 at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Kuching.

Thereafter, he served in Bau and Sri Aman before coming to serve in Serian Parish in Aug 2008.
