ALOR SETAR: Kedah Islamic Religious Department (Jaik) does not have the power to act against unregistered ‘tahfiz’ schools as they are beyond its jurisdiction.

A Jaik spokesman said it could only take action against schools that registered the department and even then it has limited jurisdiction.

“Cases of misconduct should be reported to authorities so that action can be taken,” he said commenting on the detention of three students from a ‘tahfiz’ school in Kuala Pegang, Baling for suspected sodomy.

The 12 year-old students were believed to have abused and sodomised a pair of twins aged eight and nine years-old at the school on Tuesday.
