Perak govt suggests referendum on modern crematorium

IPOH: The Perak government has suggested that the people of Buntong carry out a referendum on the modern crematorium planned for their area.

State executive councillor Datuk Mah Hang Soon said yesterday that a referendum would be the best way to resolve the issue, with objections to the project raised by residents, political parties and non-governmental organisations.

“The referendum will reflect the wishes of the majority … We want to see how many support building the crematorium and who appose it,” he said after chairing a meeting on the project with the non-Muslim residents of Buntong.

“It appears as though the project is accepted unanimously but there are still a very few who are dissatisfied ,” he added.

Dr Mah said the RM2.5 million project was planned after a request from residents and NGOs as the nearest crematorium now was 17km away in Bercham.

He said the government will change the location should the majority of Buntong residents vote against it. — Bernama
