KUALA LUMPUR: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has urged the needy who are in financial dilemma to seek help from the Welfare Department.

She said the ministry channeled RM1.2 billion a year to the department to assist about 450,000 people every month and there was no reason why the government could not provide assistance, as other ministries, agencies, non-governmental organisations and individuals were also helping out.

She told this to reporters after gracing the ‘30-Hour Famine 2011 Countdown Event’ at Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil here yesterday.

The event themed “Child Health Crisis” and co-organised by World Vision Malaysia, Sin Chew Daily and Help University College, is aimed at creating awareness about the plight of children and communities besides raising funds for the needy.

Shahrizat also handed a ministry contribution of RM50,000.

More than 18,000 Malaysians took part in the activity by undergoing a 30-hour fast beginning noon yesterday.

About RM1.5 million was raised to benefit local and international recipients in Africa, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Burma, Malaysia, North Korea and Thailand. — Bernama
