DAP rep urges DUN to probe racist remark

KUCHING: Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei has challenged the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) to launch a probe into the racist remark “balik China” (go back to China) allegedly uttered in the august House during the June sitting.

The state DAP deputy publicity secretary said DUN must set an example lest racial tolerance might be jeopardised.

“During the Dewan sitting in June, an ADUN (assemblyman) from Barisan Nasional accused the DAP of unnecessarily labelling his remarks of ‘balik China’ as racist.

“He asked why it was branded as racist. To him, it is not racist at all. This has shown a bad example to our people,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Wong stressed that the ‘balik China’ remark had hurt the Chinese community and, unfortunately, they had been used in school as well.

In a recent case, a teacher who taught Form Six students in Tapah near here allegedly blurted out “Stupid boys. Bahasa pun tak pandai, balik China”.

Wong: “Just because those boys are not fluent in Bahasa Malaysia and their teacher told them to ‘balik China’. I can see why such racist remark is extended to schools.

“It is all because leaders of the state failed to set a good example to our people. When similar utterances were made against me during the sitting in June, it was allowed,” he charged.
