DAP’s claim baseless, says state Election Commission chief

KUCHING: The State Election Commission (EC) yesterday described as “baseless and unfair” a claim made by the state DAP that they had registered permanent residents as voters.

Its state director Datu Takun Sunggah said yesterday that such a claim can’t be true because the voters’ registration system is linked directly to the National Registration Department (NRD) system in an arrangement known as ALIS (or Agency link-Up System).

“When we post data or MyKad applications, NRD’s record will appear.

“The record will indicate if an applicant is a permanent resident or otherwise,” he said. He further explained that if the applicants had PR status, EC would not register them.

“There is no way that EC had registered people with PR status as voters when the NRD records are clear.”

To clear the matter, Takun urged the DAP to substantiate their claims so that a proper investigation could be carried out.

“Before the DAP can accuse EC of breaching election-related law, show proof first so that we can investigate the claims.”

On Sunday, state DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng told a press conference that there were discrepancies in the June 2011 voters electoral roll.

The Sibu MP also questioned the number of postal voters which had increased drastically by 635. In 2008, there were
only 2,618 postal voters in Sibu parliamentary constituency.
