MIRI: Efforts to put Miri on the global tourism map should not totally rely on existing tourism products.

Datuk Sebastian Ting the Political Secretary to Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, said there were many ways to translate creatively tourist products in order to make Miri better known in other countries.

Speaking at the Farewell Dinner to eight Taiwanese participants in the Lions International Youth Exchange Programme (YEP) at Parkcity Everly Hotel Miri last Thursday, Ting, who is also the vice chairman of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party Piasau branch, said the youth exchange programme was a fine example.

“The international YEP conducted by the Lions Clubs indirectly can help to further promote Miri in the world effectively,” he stated.

Thus, he praised the Lions Clubs for the commitment to implement the programme. He wanted the Lions Clubs to, perhaps, enhance the network programme with other international Lions Clubs.

“With this programme, it will at least give a good picture of Miri to the people of Taiwan. It is because Miri is not known to
the Taiwanese.”

He called the participants not to forget the programme once they returned to their respective hometowns.

Instead, they must become ambassadors to Miri and help promote the city to their family, relatives and friends.

“Perhaps with your help, there will be more Taiwanese tourists to visit Miri,” he said, adding Miri and Taiwan shared some Chinese similarities, such as language, food and culture.

A total of eight participants from Taiwan took part in the programme hosted by Lions Club 308-A2 District.

The group from Taiwan was the first batch following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Lions Clubs of Miri and its counterpart in Taiwan five years ago.

The participants were Chuang Chia Cheng, Chiu Sung Yu, Kang Yung Ching, Kang Yen Ling, Hu Ching Sheng, Yeh Hung Wei, Lo Yu Ting and Huang Pei Chia.

They arrived in Miri on Aug 14 and took part in a series of activities including a visit to Riam Road Middle School, Curtin University of Technology Sarawak, and family adoption programme.
